Lasik is a widely performed procedure that has restored vision to thousands of people without the need for glasses.
Will Lasik Work for Me?
How is Lasik Performed? Lasik is usually performed in an outpatient center. The procedure may focus on one eye at a time, or both eyes may be completed on the same visit. Before the procedure, you will visit with your ophthalmologist for a pre-procedural exam. The ophthalmologist will evaluate your eyes, including the thickness of the cornea and the contour of the eye. You will be instructed to stop wearing for a period of time before the procedure. During the operation, you will be given a mild sedative and drops will be used to dilate your eyes. A ring is used to apply suction to the eye and your eye surgeon will use an instrument (there are multiple types) to cut the outer layer of the eye. This creates a corneal flap and provides access for the lasik procedure. This process may be uncomfortable, though it is generally well tolerated. A laser is then used to reconstruct the stromal layer of the cornea . The laser uses precise technology to remove tissue while preserving the surrounding tissue of the cornea. After the procedure, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops are given. Protective goggles may also be given to prevent scratching the eyes at night during sleep.
When will the changes in my vision occur? Many patients experience clear vision immediately after surgery. For other patients, it may take a few months for the eyes to adjust before the full effects of Lasik eye surgery are seen.
